Colorado boy faces murder charge after father found dead

Posted on May 9, 2014

When a minor is charged with a serious crime, many aspects of the case may differ than if the situation involved a legal adult. As a result, a young individual who finds himself facing murder charges may need as much information as he can receive about what he may face during legal proceedings. This knowledge may allow him to make better informed decisions about his case.

A 13-year-old boy in Colorado may soon be trying to gain such knowledge after he was recently charged with first-degree murder. The charge allegedly stems from the purported murder of the boy’s father, who had apparently been dead inside their home for nearly a week before authorities found the body. Authorities were reportedly alerted to the situation by the father’s employer after the boy had allegedly called in multiple consecutive days, stating that his father would not be coming into work.

When authorities arrived at the boy’s home, he purportedly told them that his father was dead. It was also reported that the victim had two gunshot wounds to his head. At this time, it has not yet been determined whether the 13-year-old will be tried as an adult in relation to this alleged event.

A murder charge is an extremely serious allegation, understandably, and a conviction of such a charge can have detrimental effects on the boy’s future. His legal situation may change, depending on whether the decision is made for the boy to face the charges as an adult. While he awaits this decision, his considerable legal rights require careful protection as this case begins to move forward through the Colorado criminal justice system.
