2 alleged gang members convicted in federal court

Posted on June 11, 2015

Two Denver men have been found guilty of gun-related charges in federal court. The 32- and 34-year-old men were alleged to be gang members and they will likely spend multiple years behind bars as a result of their convictions, according to federal authorities.

The cases were prosecuted by the office of U.S. Attorney John Walsh, and they were investigated by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The 34-year-old man was originally wanted for violating his parole. He was taken into custody in Denver after visiting a grocery store. Police alleged to have found $3,755 in his pocket at the time of the arrest. They also allegedly found methamphetamine, other drug-related items and a 9-mm gun in his vehicle. They charged the man with drug distribution and gun possession. As a result of his conviction, the man could face as much as a $5 million fine and life in prison.

The 32-year-old man was originally picked up for a noise violation. However, police noticed that he had a gang tattoo and asked him to get out of his car. That is when he tried to flee by driving away. Police later found the man’s vehicle with a 9-mm gun inside it. They also found the man trying to hide under a different car.

Following a felony conviction, Colorado residents usually have to wait some time before their sentencing hearing is carried out. Depending on the results of the sentencing, a defendant may choose to appeal the sentence if he or she feels it was overly harsh given the nature and circumstances of the crime.
